Everyone hates her for being rich and the only person she can become friends with is a walking Italian stereotype who's super smart and thinks her chauffeur is her dad. It was all melodrama.īasically, the heroine is the rich daughter of a man who owns an entire chain of department stores but he's sent her to poor school to build character. It has the same trashy vibes as one of those Harlequin Presents novels from the 1980s and 1990s, or a Jackie Collins novel without the fun sleaze that makes her books so addictive. Judith McNaught has been recommended to me so many times and when I found out that this book has some of my favorite tropes (hero wants revenge, rich/poor match, second chance but as enemies, etc.), I was like YES YES YES. Sweet, freeing ending.Dammit, I wanted to love this book. Misconceptions and misunderstandings throw obstacles in their path including her controlling ass of a father. Meredith goes on to prove herself, throwing her energies and passion into the family business, Bancroft and Co., a premiere department store in Chicago until Matt storms back into her life eleven years later as a feared financier.Įngaged to her childhood love, Parker, Meredith discovers the truth about her divorce. Meredith becomes pregnant after one night of passion, and they marry only to find themselves divorced through betrayal, tragedy, and misunderstanding.

Matt is an ambitious, 28-year-old steelworker by week and mechanic by weekend from Indiana, planning on his Venezuelan oil field bonus to give him the seed money to start his own empire while Meredith is an ugly duckling who has blossomed into a swan despite her tyrannical father.

McNaught did an amazing job on this story. This is the typical poor-but-ambitious-and-determined sexy man drawn to the young, beautiful, rich girl-woman who are torn apart only to reunite at the end after much hardship. The theme of the Second Opportunities series is simply that, second chances.
